Ice planning guide

How Much Ice Do I Need for a Party?

Estimate pounds and bags of ice for drinks, coolers and hot-weather parties.

Start around 0.75–1.25 lb per guestUse the lower end for drink ice only and the higher end when you are also filling coolers.

How much ice per person?

For drinks only, a useful starting point is around 0.75–1 pound per guest. If the same ice also needs to keep coolers cold, plan closer to 1.25 pounds per guest. Hot outdoor events may require even more.

Quick ice examples

  • 25 guests: about 20–35 lb
  • 50 guests: about 40–65 lb
  • 75 guests: about 60–95 lb
  • 100 guests: about 75–125 lb

Bag size matters

If your store sells 10-pound bags, a 60-pound plan means six bags. Round up instead of down, especially in warm weather.

Separate drink ice from cooler ice

Ice used in beverage cups should be kept clean and separate from ice used around cans, bottles or food containers.
